Tamale Youth Home Cultural GRoup, TYHCG, in brief

In 1985 The National Youth Council allowed a few musicians from Centre for National Culture in Tamale to use Youth Home for rehearsals, and through this the Tamale Youth Home Cultural Group, TYHCG, was established.

Some of the former members of YHCG have achieved employment as dance- and drumming teachers in local schools, based on skills they developed at Youth Home Cultural Group. Several former members also dance for National Theatre in Accra. During the years many people have learned traditional music and dance in this group. Some have travelled abroad to work as dance teachers and some continue their music studies at the university level in Ghana as well as abroad.

At Youth Home you will find 3 different handicrafts. Tailoring, smock weaving and drum making.

The workshops, established in 2006, each have a professional instructor.

In 2017 the group started Tamale Cultural Tours. Tamale Cultural Tours is registrered under Ghana Tourism Authority as a limited shareholder company.

TYHCG has been a vital part of the cultural activities in Ghana for more than twenty years.

Rehearsal at Youth Home

The aims and objectives of the group are:

To promote the rich culture and widen the scope of tourists attraction in the Northern Region.

To strengthen the participation of young people in Ghanaian culture and increase their self-confidence.

To empower young people with the requisite knowledge in the production of handicrafts to reduce unemployment.

To educate young people in conflict resolution through the use of drama.

To establish friendship with other cultural groups in the country and worldwide.

Local and international performances

TYHCG performs a variety of dances from all over Ghana.

Among them are:

Takai, Tora, Bammaya, Jara (Performed by Dagumbas in the Northern Region; Kpanlogo (Ga, Greateer Accra Region) Fast Agbekor (Ewe, Volta Region); etc.

TYHCG has close ties to other cultural groups in Ghana which we highly recommend. Among them are AFI-African Footprints International, Cape Coast National Theatre Group, The National Theatre, Accra and Ghana's National Dance Ensemble, Legon University, Accra.

We have travelled to Denmark, Holland and Greenland.

The group is open for memberships

Membership in the group is open to all interested young people.
Group members must actively participate in all programmes and activities of the cultural group.
Members must accept and abide by the constitution and all other regulations of the group.
Members must promptly pay registration and membership dues.
