The Dagumbas has a very rich and living culture where music plays a crucial role. Especially whenever funerals are performed the traditional music and dances are important. Funerals are performed all over the year, but from November to February the number of funerals performed increases. If you ask the leaders of YHCG they will take you to a local funeral to witness the powerful dancing and drumming going on at these places. Some dances like Takai is performed in the afternoon while others like the popular female dance Tora might come on in the late evening time while other traditional dances again like Baamayaa and Jara might be performed in the middle of the night from 2 a.m. going to daybreak! Other tourist attractions YHCG also organize excursions to local tourist attractions in the Northern part of Ghana, for example Mole National Part (3 hours driving from Tamale), The Historic Slave Camp and The Crocodile Pond in Paga (2 hours from Tamale and very recommendable!). A visit to Quagadougou – the capital of Burkina Faso is also possible (6 hours from Tamale).
Local weddings, name-giving ceremonies, funerals, chief-instalments and festivals are also attractions, which you shouldn’t miss. We will take you there if you wish. The leaders of YHCG has a long experience in guiding visitors to the above mentioned places. Accommodation in Tamale There are a variety of different hotels and guest-houses in Tamale at different price-levels. It is easy to find a suitable place.
We can recommend TICCS (Tamale Institute of Cross Cultural Studies) which besides good rooms with or without air con also have the best and cosiest bar in town: “Jungle bar” on top of the roof. As the name indicates the place is also a cultural centre, where you can learn a lot about African culture, including the local language Dagbani. The place has a fine library on African culture and a lovely garden too. The price for a double room with air-con is aprox. 170.000 cedis (~ 17 $) Other fine places to stay are: Catholic Guesthouse All are situated in or close to the town-centre. YHCG can also offer you private accommodation at local people’s houses. This will give you a unique opportunity to witness everyday life in Tamale as well as to make social links to the local people. Price: 50.000 ( ~5 $) inclusive breakfast (bread, egg, coffee, tea, milk etc.) |
