Our social work and profile Our activities at Youth Home have also been developed to offer the local youth possibilities to involve themselves in “positive” and future-focused activities instead of passivity and idleness. At the centre you can meet like-minded and create social contacts and a future professional network. The handicraft activities can serve as a supplementary education in handicraft, which might pave the way for a future apprenticeship or other kinds of employment within the field of a certain handicraft. Anybody who is serious in his or her attitude is welcome to join the activities provided by YHCG. The activities are free of charge for the local people. Several old members of YHCG has achieved job as music-teachers at local schools in Tamale, as dancers at the national companies in Accra and some continue their music studies at university level.
Our performance stage is regularly used by a local Forum Theatre Group. Forum Theatre is participatory theatre, which involves the audience in creating solutions to problems of concern in their own lives. On basis of a short play on a well-known problem, members of the audience are invited on stage to help changing the play. Forum theatre is involving and exciting for the audience, and it is an effective means of empowering people to make changes in their own lives. Last year YHCG and the Forum Theatre group made several joint performances, and we are continuing the success and co-operation this coming year (2008). Our overall ambition is to create a vibrating and lively centre for culture at Youth Home, where local people as well as visitors from abroad and from other parts of Ghana can meet and benefit from the ongoing activities. |
